Most underrated? There’s only one answer, and that’s Cardiacs. A band that influenced bands as diverse as Faith No More, Blur and Napalm Death. Think about that for a moment. The album Sing For God is an absolute stone-cold masterpiece, yet how many of you have heard of it?
FWIW, back when they started I thought they were dreadful. That was my fault - I wasn’t ready for them. Only in later years did I realise how good these were. Sadly by then front man Tim Smith had suffered a catastrophic heart attack and consequent brain damage while at a My Bloody Valentine gig (which I was at) and they never played again, and Tim finally passed away in July after suffering dreadfully for 12 years.
If you want their idea of a pop song, then it really doesn’t get any better than this:
If you want a peek into the full-on nightmare fuel world of Cardiacs, then this kept me awake for days as a teenager:
Most underrated band of all time? Without a shadow of doubt.
Thanks for posting those two clips. To Go Off and Things really brings back memories. And yes, given their influence I think it's safe to put them in the underrated category.
Luke Haines. So underrated that I'd completely forgotten about him. But he's written some incredible songs over the years. I remember seeing him when he first started, playing with the Auteurs when then supported Suede at the 100 Club. Also, his autobiography is one of the best and funniest accounts of the BritPop years that you'll ever read.

Never heard of em but will have a listen. Remind me a bit of devo based on the second song - another hugely underrated band.
