Thanks, Stowaway: I did of course mean Showbiz...Stowaway wrote: ↑Thu Aug 20, 2020 12:13 pmSunburn was a single from the first album, called Showbiz. I think the first 3 albums are terrific, but they lost their way spectacularly after that. Shame, because they’re a brilliant live band. Their Glastonbury set in 2004 is still probably the best thing I’ve ever been to.Scuba Diver wrote: ↑Thu Aug 20, 2020 11:25 amSunburn was okay too. Post these; they simply became a parody, and should have long since thrown it in....LeytonstoneRed07 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 20, 2020 9:48 am
Origin of Symmetry is a great album. They should have given up after that.
Senility creeping in, I think...

Whilst I respect your opinion may I question that they can't write songs. Have you missed the number of hits they have had, the numbers that they sold in and the success of such chart positions?JimbO wrote: ↑Thu Aug 20, 2020 9:24 amI think that the 8.8 million people who saw him on his last tour don't.Scuba Diver wrote: ↑Thu Aug 20, 2020 8:13 amHe's terrible.Apple Wumble wrote: ↑Wed Aug 19, 2020 5:46 pm Ed Sheeran will be looked back on and cringed like we do with some of the cheesy poo poo from the 80s.
Though I think most recognise that already.
As i always say to my mates if everyone liked the same sort of music their would be 3 bands on the radio and it would be poo poo.
As i've posted on the other thread RadioHead (Thom Yorke sounds like he's having a tooth pulled when he sings) Pink Floyd (self indulgent bollocks).
On an aside I had a barman in my local who refused to serve me cos of my opinions about Radiohead. His rationale was that they're all technically brilliant musicians mine was they may well be but they can't write songs and TY can't sing apart from that they're brilliant.

I do like their music, but they are undeniably plagiarists.
Sued for at least half the tracks on Led Zeppelin 1, I believe..

Re: Most OVER-rated bands/musicians of all time
They've had 7 top ten hits (one of which they're so up their own backsides they purportedly haven't played for years) no number 1's hardly puts them up with the all time hit makers. Also the amount of hits somebody has doesn't mean they can write good songs ,numerous boy bands back up that theory.Thor wrote: ↑Thu Aug 20, 2020 9:35 pmWhilst I respect your opinion may I question that they can't write songs. Don't blame yourself, with only the limited information available from his 20 plus years posting on here it was impossible to forsee it not working out too well.

I would ban you for pointing out where I'm to blame but with this place being increasingly populated by right wing fruitcakes, I suspect you'd take that as a bonus. Therefore you can continue.Mick McQuaid wrote: ↑Fri Aug 21, 2020 10:17 amDon't blame yourself, with only the limited information available from his 20 plus years posting on here it was impossible to forsee it not working out too well.

We all have different musical tastes so we conflict each other.

Re: Most OVER-rated bands/musicians of all time
Exactly, so the original question is pretty pointless. If enough people respond to that question eventually every band or musician ever will be name because there’s not a single artist that literally nobody thinks is overrated.
Even on this thread with a relatively small sample size we’ve already had Hendrix and Bowie named.
By the way, I’m not suggesting that anyone is wrong. It’s subjective. If you think that Pink Floyd are overrated than nobody can deny that you think that.

Re: Most OVER-rated bands/musicians of all time
The Smiths. And I say that as a fan.
Back in their time they achieved mediocre record sales and played at mid-size venues. They were a reasonably successful niche indie act.
But since they split their legend has grown our of all proportion. They're often referred to as an iconic, era-defining band, despite being nothing of the sort when they were around. And (whisper it) Morrissey's best and most interesting work has been in his solo years, while the others have achieved nothing of note (Marr has had a few okay collaborations, but that's about it).

Its subjective of course, but you could make an argument that the following can and should be spoken about at the same level or better.Scuba Diver wrote: ↑Fri Aug 21, 2020 8:09 am

Re: Most OVER-rated bands/musicians of all time
must admit dunners back in the 80's I didn't like them, but I'm one of the people you mention as I really started to appreciate their music many years later after they had split up.Dunners wrote: ↑Fri Aug 21, 2020 3:48 pm The Smiths. And I say that as a fan.
