Question, with modern technology the way it is
Apart from selfish people who cant manage to do without a holiday abroad for a few months,
Who should/would be travelling internationally anyway at the time of a worldwide pandemic?
Close the borders for three months and let’s see how quickly we get a hold of eliminating this awful virus.
Like New Zealand, we are an island, so will therefore surely be better placed than most to get on top of the situation. Stop travel to stop the spread.
It’s not like it will be forever.

Yep, you may stop a few hunderd people more dying of corona ( given most cases are spread by people already here now), but several million will die of untreated illnesses or starvation because they cannot get enough food or necessary medication.
The economy will collapse far more than iit has already and millions more will be out of work
not sure you have thought this through

Re: Question, with modern technology the way it is
I think it's obvious the OP was talking about individuals travel tbh. Clearly we'd need to allow import and export of goods. Business meetings can be conducted pretty much via tech. Where documents/contracts need signing there are technical remote sign-off solutions to this too. Holiday travel is the area that needs to be restricted for the short-term and that's more or less happening now by default anyway. To close borders to everything other than essential travel should be possible but in all honesty, it should have happened back in March. To do it now would be challenged in the Courts, as already threatened, by the travel industry and would be generally unpopular. And we all know that Boris doesn't like doing anything to make himself unpopular.....spen666 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 14, 2020 11:11 amAnd all the food & medicene and other products we import everyday will arrive how?kokomO wrote: ↑Fri Aug 14, 2020 10:16 am Apart from selfish people who cant manage to do without a holiday abroad for a few months,

Sort of agree. Really do not understand people travelling abroad atm. Each to their own but surely you can give up full English's on a beach in spain, surrounded by Brits until next year. We have some lovely beaches.

Just go without for a year. It won't kill you.

Thanks, that’s exactly what I meant, exports and imports can still happen safety and bio securely without the transport in of people who are the reason behind transmission.BoniO wrote: ↑Fri Aug 14, 2020 11:20 amI think it's obvious the OP was talking about individuals travel tbh. Re: Question, with modern technology the way it is
Does New Zealand have thousands attempting to arrive daily on rubber dinghies?

Other than a great diversion tool for our seriously inept government that point is totally irrelevant and you know it.

Re: Question, with modern technology the way it is
So, you think these "thousands" are the cause of our Covid issues? If not, then how is this even relevant?
Assumptions:
1) That there really are "thousands" of people attempting to cross the channel every day. Sources please.
2) Of these "thousands" how many actually make it to the UK? Sources please.

I wish they had let them go abroad. Roads are packed here. Villages are mobbed. Rubbish everywhere. The Great British public can’t stay in their local area for just one year.kokomO wrote: ↑Fri Aug 14, 2020 10:16 am Apart from selfish people who cant manage to do without a holiday abroad for a few months,

Re: Question, with modern technology the way it is
Its relevant in that it is easier for NZ to prevent people arriving in their country, either legally or illegally.BoniO wrote: ↑Fri Aug 14, 2020 12:32 pmSo, you think these "thousands" are the cause of our Covid issues? If not, then how is this even relevant?

Re: Question, with modern technology the way it is
Well as you couldn't be asked to look it up, or you knew the true numbers, here's a link to the BBC stating that there have been about 4000 people trying to get across the channel - THIS YEAR. Even the Express can only sex it up to "possibly 7500 by the end of the year". Are you related to Thor?Ornchurch wrote: ↑Fri Aug 14, 2020 12:40 pmIts relevant in that it is easier for NZ to prevent people arriving in their country, either legally or illegally.BoniO wrote: ↑Fri Aug 14, 2020 12:32 pmSo, you think these "thousands" are the cause of our Covid issues? Nice one. Ignore the general point by a arguing over the minutiae. Good diversion tactic.BoniO wrote: ↑Fri Aug 14, 2020 1:27 pmWell as you couldn't be asked to look it up, or you knew the true numbers, here's a link to the BBC stating that there have been about 4000 people trying to get across the channel - THIS YEAR. Re: Question, with modern technology the way it is
Hahahaha - brilliant. Well you really can't be being serious but you did make me laugh. Year to date the average number trying to cross the channel is just over 10 a day. I suppose there's not much difference between thousands a day and 10 a day. My bad.Ornchurch wrote: ↑Fri Aug 14, 2020 1:31 pmNice one. Ignore the general point by a arguing over the minutiae.
