I would wager (pardon the pun) that not one person had a single penny on that as even a fiver at 300/1 would’ve instantly cut its odds in half.

Especially in such a low key, middle of the week, class 6 maiden.

I think the trainer would have advised a tenner each way on it .

Also it was a decent sized field with 4 or 5 horses 100-1 or bigger
So not many odds would have been cut.

I use to work in the game for many years on the winning side (the bookies) believe me if ANY money had been put on that horse its starting price would not have been 300/1

Different game in Ireland fella , bookies run a fair game .
Regardless of a €5 euro punt
😁

Look at the prices on all these .

I don't bet so don't get it really. However, the tote win was half the value of the odds it won at, does that mean someone backed it cos like kokomo said any betting would have halved the odds.

A tote doesnt work like that thory.

Just for the record
If the owner places a bet at 14.29.30 of 5£/€ &
the race goes off at 14.30 sharp there will be no price change .
A market will only move if the majority of the money coming is huge

Only 4 runners were single figure price
4 were double figure price
Leaving 7 on triple figure odds .
Being that it was a maiden , meaning none had won a race before
Small bets are not going to dramatically change odds .
Especially in Ireland .
In Britain it may differ but there they are far fairer to the punter.

If id backed the fav id want to see the photograph
😁

As it explains later in the article
They had placed small money on his debutat Limerick but must have been small stakes as the Horse returned at odds of 250-1 , which really kind of proves the point that i was making .

Only a big bet on those odds would make a bookmaker slash prices.

I think the old trackside gamblers are a thing of the past now, used to love seeing the big punters dig deep into thier pockets and pull out a right heavy wad of money and the top on track bookies would'ant flinch and lay thier bet.
The characters were all well known and the bookies like John Power at the wick and the Stow on dog night would make it a great evenings entertainment.
Now days most big betting is done on-line and through the offices. Trackside punters are more like £5 to £20 backers, party crowds and p.ss heads.
Real shame it was always a great time even when you did your money 😁

john would never walk away from a bet, he would take anything on. I was in the sportsmen drinking with him one day and his phone rings a punter wants to bet £30k on a horse he listens to whats being said and just replies take the bet, as cool as you like. He won. The same punter wants to do £20k on the next race same thing happens he takes the bet. He won. I asked him aint you worried about losing ? He replied if I don't take on the bet I lose more than I gain. Kind of made sense to me.

I'm sure I know you AA.
