Re: Lure of the O's
Ling always does transfer business towards the end of the transfer window. The league does not start until 12Sept perhaps they don’t want to start paying a player wages until nearer the start. Money at this time is the criteria.Top of the JES wrote: ↑Fri Aug 07, 2020 12:30 pmThe club have already said they expect to bring in a centre half and a striker, sorry things are not moving quickly enough for you but if you are patient you might just see some movement quite soon. Doesn't have a football identity what are you on about you really do spout some nonsense, do you think Cisse is here by accident, he believes in the club obviously a lot more than some of our fans.gshaw wrote: ↑Fri Aug 07, 2020 11:40 am McCallum is a NL player tbh, no loss there.
I don't think we're after anyone, wouldn't be surprised if Cissé is the only signing of the summer (and I'm bloody glad we got him).
Club looks to be going into financial survival mode for this season, lumbered with the squad from last season unable to afford any additions. In the current climate seems like batten down the hatches and ride out next season with the view other clubs won't be able to do the same.
Could be seen as prudent business wise but risky on the football front. Blind faith in the NL squad coming good this time round...
As a player coming in the club doesn't really have a footballing identity now, not really somewhere you're going to move up the pyramid via promotions or to work with a strong experienced manager to improve your game.

Re: Lure of the O's
To me our club is in afar better position than most other L2 clubs. We have a team of around 20 players who we had last season .Some teams have to bring in 8 or 9 players possibly paying them peanuts to survive. The structure of the club is very good and the team we have to promote the club like DM is second to none. The fans should not forget where we were 3years ago. Everyone at the club has the same goal going forward. We should be proud.gshaw wrote: ↑Fri Aug 07, 2020 11:40 am McCallum is a NL player tbh, no loss there.

If Danny Happe goes, I really hope he gets a good move that gives him proper game time like Macca. It seems that Josh Koroma’s move has not worked out the way he had hoped.

Macklin and the business side of the club shows the kind of drive and ambition I wish was matched by the footballing side.moonwalk19 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 10, 2020 11:12 amTo me our club is in afar better position than most other L2 clubs. Just hope Cissé shoring up the CM means we can at least hover around the middle of table rather than nervously watching the relegation spots like season just gone. Have all the structure you want if the club went non-league again all that work would be in vain.

I reckon we'll be in League One within 5 years. That would have meant Martin Ling and the footballing staff will have delivered Conference to League One in 8 seasons. Can't wait.

Re: Lure of the O's
I hope so. I do think we could be as well, but only with a sweeping adaptation of philosophy, careful and considerate spending on things like contract extensions.
Personally, I dont think Ling is the man to take us forward. He did what he came in for in getting us back into the FL. But i hope he proves me wrong.

Re: Lure of the O's
We've done the philosophy thing though. It's overrated I think. The only one we really need to care about right now is the philosophy of winning more games than we lose or draw. (Appreciate I'm setting myself up for retort there!). Anything more rigid I believe could be counterproductive.
I'm really interested because I'd say us being in L1 and ML still being here both being true within 5 years is I'd suggest is about 50%. If we do go up again with him overseeing it, within that timeframe, I think it would be really difficult to say he hadn't been very successful. People still will though.
P.S Agree with you on the extensions. Think in the same way people get bias about young players at clubs because they see them each week ('Semedo will play in the Prem!' etc), I reckon similar happens with contracts. Seeing their impact off the pitch making decision makers overstate their necessity for a new deal.

Re: Lure of the O's
Isn't the boards idea is to have a promotion every 3/4 years? If so we have to be promoted by the end of season 21/22 based on the fact we've had 1 season already in this league.

Re: Lure of the O's
I agree, it would be a success. Personally, I think 6 years to get out of league two, with very decent financial backing (judging my the accounts) and a 'top 8 budget', its setting expectations fairly low. I get where you're coming from, but personally I think that unless we are not at least challenging for the playoffs season after next then we need to rethink our approach.PoliticOs wrote: ↑Mon Aug 10, 2020 12:29 pm We've done the philosophy thing though. And I guess thats what I mean in terms of our approach. i'm not convinced there's much of a system beyond, Ling/Ross thinks a player is good. There's lots of bias in there, and doesn't seem to be much thinking about things like how does a player being a year older affect their ability, what could we get on the market for the same wage, etc... I obviously dont know this but I just cant imagine there's much analytics involved and it's all pretty old school.

Lots more money but not many minutes on the pitch for Huddersfield then loaned out to Rotherham with no minutes for them at all. Finally coming back and not being allowed to play for Huddersfield after the lockdownApple Wumble wrote: ↑Mon Aug 10, 2020 11:41 amHow has it not worked out?

So you've judged that the move hadn't worked out how he'd hoped despite not knowing his motivation?DuvB wrote: ↑Mon Aug 10, 2020 1:13 pmLots more money but not many minutes on the pitch for Huddersfield then loaned out to Rotherham with no minutes for them at all. I think a 21 year old kid with very little league experience, going to a club who were in the prem a couple of years ago, who's definitely got more money
and more career opportunities now is a good start and it will take a good 3-4 years to know if it's worked out.
(plus he did play for Rotherham FYI)

Yes (although I thought it was 5 seasons?). But you're not accounting for the fact we went up a few years ahead of schedule. We were putting the expectation to go up at the end of season 4 or season 5 and we did it in season 2. If we did it as you suggest that would be doubling the success rate.

Re: Lure of the O's
I dunno if he will be. 14 games for Championship and League One clubs as a 21 year old having just been in non league isn't bad at all. 7 appearances in the Championship. That's pretty good going. Macca has just done particularly well.

Don’t be so negative . We. Will have a good footballing side this season. I am very optimistic that we will be around the play offs. A lot of sides will struggle this season with the current climate. I bet a lot of Southend fans will envy our set up.gshaw wrote: ↑Mon Aug 10, 2020 12:01 pmMacklin and the business side of the club shows the kind of drive and ambition I wish was matched by the footballing side.moonwalk19 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 10, 2020 11:12 amTo me our club is in afar better position than most other L2 clubs. 174 minutes for Huddersfield and 86 for Rotherham. Would anyone be happy with that? That’s less than three games all season.

He’s 21 who’s never played above league two. You’ll talking bollocks.
He’s also now in a higher division than macca so that’s also a moot point
