Payback time
The £11 million given to the Tory party in the last year by property developers is now being paid back in the form of planning deregulation. Boris will moan that it takes too long, but thats mainly due to developers trying to do things that local people and their elected representatives do not want.

Do you mean NIMBYS and lefty anti- capitalist socialist Councillors when you say local people, mourning still, the loss of Corbyn?Mikero wrote: ↑Thu Aug 06, 2020 10:34 pm The £11 million given to the Tory party in the last year by property developers is now being paid back in the form of planning deregulation. Look at the flats at the Orient ground. Nobody who grew up in Leyton would ever had imagined such a development and there were lots of objections to it , as time as gone on , they are part of it and some of the spectators On the balconies during a match often provide additional entertainment.
There are far too many people arriving daily in the UK and not enough housing. People born in Leyton can not afford to by a small flat in Leyton for circa 450k and have to move out. The councils are too obstructive in planning decisions and if you have ever seen the state of some of those councillors at a planning meeting you will realise why the council is such a mess.

I attended that planning committee meeting and the bulk of the objections were to do with parking and noise on match days not the concept of flats at a football ground.

There is nothing anti-capitalist about wanting houses that people can afford to own. I think you will find that most of those of the NIMBY persuasion vote Conservative, as the wish to conserve is intrinsically NIMBY.

Re: Payback time
Unbelievable.
Actually, no I don't suppose that it is.
The usual people citing immigration for the lack of housing - what a surprise. Who do you blame for that - Jeremy Corbyn?
Lest we forget that In 2010, Theresa May promised to reduce net migration to below 100,000. What she actually managed to achieve as Home Secretary, was the biggest migration inflow in history, with the annual rate peaking at over 300,000 several times. Indeed, in November 2015, immigration reached an all time record high of 336,000 - meaning Theresa May was missing her arbitrary target by an astounding 236%!
However, also you are conveniently overlooking the primary cause and effect - the abymal track record of the Tory Party since 2010.
Most unaffordable homes ever
After coming to power in 2010 the Conservatives have overseen the lowest levels of housebuilding since the 1920s. This combination of weak supply, very high demand and collapsing wages has pushed house prices to their most unaffordable level ever.
If you are going to blame anyone, at least have the decency to blame yourselves - for voting this mob back into power last December. Things could have been oh so much better.

Re: Payback time
No, I havent said that, have I.
If people are, for example, coming here to work from the EU, then where are they supposed to live - in a tree house?
As I've clearly outlined above, the cause of the housing shortage is obviously the abysmal record of the Tory Party since 2010, to build new homes. The worst record since the 1920's!
The effect of that is that there is not enough new housing for the population.
Quite a simple equation to understand really, isn't it?

I don't believe that any government could put up that number of new houses year in year out so obviously the number of people coming in is too high for the country to cope with.

Number of empty homes in England rises to more than 216,000
£53.6bn of property in England is empty.
Im sure some of those numbers have fallen with Corona ,
But it shows how truly shambolic this govt is.
216, 000 empty homes in the uk & so much homelessness.

Anyway, even the full 216k wouldn't cover a years immigration according to Nuneaton's figures.

Immigrants, first-time buyers, students leaving for Uni, families separating, etc. ALL require homes. The fact clearly is that your beloved Tory Party didn't build enough of them, did it. 0/10. "Must try harder".
You appear to be pointing the finger of 10 years worth of Tory Government incompetence around home building at me!
Perhaps these questions should be aimed at your beloved Tory Party?
However, what level of blame DO YOU PUT on the failure of the Tory Party in this instance?

Ornchurch seems to now be under the impression that immigrants don't share accommodation.
He seems to think that each individual immigrant requires a seperate roof over their head.

I just have the point of view that if we do not have enough enough houses to accommodate those who already live here that it might be more prudent to reduce those numbers rather than keep pumping money in to building new homes.
I keep reading on here that the country does not have the money to pay for Covid for example and that the younger generation will be paying for years to come but where will the money come from to build new council accomodation?

Re: Payback time
Pro immigration but denying that is the reason for not enough houses is such a bizarre stance to take. The young seem to love immigration but then moan they can’t get a home. There were homes for everybody 40 years ago, they could barely give them away. Since then birth rates have plummeted amongst the white population which are a majority in this country. So why are there not enough homes? It’s a conundrum that’s for sure.

I checked the figures, of the 216,000 11,000 are council owned properties. Many councils are running incentive schemes to get landlords to refurbish properties put them back on the market or lease them.

First off, neither Labour nor Conservative governments since the beginning of 2000 have much to write home about in terms of house building and solving the housing crisis.NuneatonO's wrote: ↑Fri Aug 07, 2020 12:01 pm After coming to power in 2010 the Conservatives have overseen the lowest levels of housebuilding since the 1920s. But claiming that it all started in 2010 is simply not true.
House building in England (to March 2018)
https://fullfact.org/economy/house-building-england/
If you look at the graphs the last Labour Government initially did well but then the numbers plummeted (maybe the money started running out). Under the current Government the numbers have been rising.
There's still a lot more that could and should be done, perhaps we can agree on that.

Re: Payback time
I can 100% agree that the previous Labour administrations could have done even more.
That said, even Blair & Co. didn't fail as spectacularly as the abysmal Tory record over the last 10 years.
Such a shame. It really didn't have to be this way.
