Re: Massive explosion in Beirut
This is absolutely hearbreaking.
Thousands of people potentially injured across Beirut; in a Country that has experienced more atrocities than we could ever imagine fellow human-beings having to endure.

Re: Massive explosion in Beirut
The second bang looked to be a nitrate explosion, the white cloud was similar to some of the IRA bombs that used fertiliser. This happened years ago in Halifax Nova Scotia, a nitate ship blew up in the harbour flattening all the wooden buildings and killing hundreds.

Think that one was high explosives. Texas in 1947 was ammonium nitrate, as this is suspected to be.Mikero wrote: ↑Tue Aug 04, 2020 10:09 pm The second bang looked to be a nitrate explosion, the white cloud was similar to some of the IRA bombs that used fertiliser. A 2 ton anchor was thrown 1.6 miles. That's about the same as Brisbane road to the Olympic stadium!

Re: Massive explosion in Beirut
Just reading that, to add to the current problems, hospitals have been so badly damaged that they cannot treat patients.
The blasts caught on film, look horrific. Apparently, they were felt 200 Kms away in Cyprus.
This is truly, truly awful.
Just to add that leaders from many Countries are offering words of support via Twitter. FFS you arseholes, instead of hollow words that mean sod all and help even less, how about just getting essential medical supplies onto air force aircraft; and getting them dispatched, with medics, NOW!

Re: Massive explosion in Beirut
Huge blast, looked akin to a small atomic bomb going off.
Surely many more will be found to have died than the current toll of death, absolutely awful.

Good to see that some (Jordan, Israel and Iran to name just three regional countries) have already started to say/do exactly that:NuneatonO's wrote: ↑Tue Aug 04, 2020 10:48 pm Just to add that leaders from many Countries are offering words of support via Twitter. Ayman Safadi, Jordan's foreign minister, said his country is ready to send any needed help to Lebanon over the blast.
In a statement, Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz and Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi offered help and said they are ready to send medical and humanitarian aid via international mediators.
"Iran is fully prepared to render assistance in any way necessary," Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Twitter.

I used to work at Bush Boake Allen on Blackhorse Road, and it was said that if it ever went up half or more of walthamstow would disappear in the blast. Obviously security around such things were high and entry was restricted to such products that could cause such things to go bang.

Re: Massive explosion in Beirut
Apparently, reports say that the explosion was equivalent to one fifth the power of the bomb that destroyed Hiroshima. Devastating, feel so sorry
for them, they are probably the most western democracy of the Arab nations, but totally corrupt.

Re: Massive explosion in Beirut
In 1944 at RAF Fauld in Staffordshire 4000 tons of high explosive bombs blew up including 500 million rounds of ammunition. About seventy people were killed including a number of Italian POW’s.
The explosion caused a 300 foot deep by 250 foot across crater which is still visible today. It’s still closed off today because of the remaining unexploded ammunition.
It was one of the largest non nuclear explosions in history and the largest on U.K. soil.
