Who's the second most successful player to come through the youth system?

Post by ComeOnYouOs »

Laurie Cunningham is the most successful player to come through Oients youth system by far.......went on to play for Man U, then Real Madrid, played for England, but who's the next most successful player to come through our ranks?

Nickey Shorey - played for England - the pinnacle of the game.

Him and Laurie , any others made the top of the mountain who STARTED at Orient?

Not sure how you judge successful but a name very rarely mentioned is Tony "Paddy" Grealish.
Came through the youth system in early mid seventies then left us and went onto play for Luton, Brighton and more importantly made around 45 apps for the Republic of Ireland.
Skilful, tenacious, tough tackling and could score a goal. Very underated.

Not absoloutely sure but i think Laurie was released by Arsenal before he came to Orient, may well be wrong. Although i always see him as a product of the Orient youth system.

Good player Shorey - interestingly Reading were scouting Lockwood for left back, but he was injured and Shorey played - the rest is history

Glenn Roeder is also worth a mention, joined the O's in 1972, having left Arsenal as a schoolboy. Made his way through the youth ranks and into the first team, making 115 appearances, before moving onto QPR, Notts Co (Loan), Newcastle, Watford, a short period back at the O's and then Gillingham - a total of 561 appearances. Roeder also won 7 England B caps, before turning to management with Gillingham, West Ham, Newcastle and Norwich

Grealish sounds like a good shout. Probably the only Orient produced player that went onto to get a big number of international caps for a competitive team.

Laurie was part of the youth system .
At Arsenal he was on schoolboy forms &
Was never classed as a professional player.
When he signed as a youth team player
That is when he becomes an O's product.

If it isnt Paddy Grealish ,
He can only be surpassed by anyone who came through the
ranks & played in the top flight, but thats before my time & I'll
Let the real old codgers have the last word on that
😉

Denis Rofe would definately be in the mix, a no nonsense tough tackling left back. He also went to my school alongside Terry Brisley.

I think Laurie C was signed from Arsenal along with Glenn Roeder by George Petchey when they were released aged 16 - not a bad day's work.

I believe Tommy Taylor also played for the O's aged 15

Not a bad team being assembled here that came through our youth system . Need a keeper and a striker
