Mixed feelings on this. Don’t like the nanny state idea at all. I’m a few pounds overweight and don’t need a government to tell me. And yes, it’s hard to lose weight, I exercise every day so my excess must be all muscle, I wish.NuneatonO's wrote: ↑Mon Jul 27, 2020 4:30 pm She's back!
Introducing fox-hunting, disability welfare-cutting, Corporation Tax-lowering, Union-hating Helen Whately. Minister for Programmed Automatons & starting far too many sentences with the word "So".
Here she is, fully programmed by Tory HQ and spouting utter drivel yet again:

But the links between obesity and such things like diabetes and Covid are well known. So what drivel are you referring to.
Fair point. However:

The RT comment was hilarious. Stanley Johnson has also appeared on RT; that's when he isn't breaking Lockdown rules and swanning off to his villa in Greece.
As for the "Islingtonian" comment. I'm pretty certain that Starmer has never lived in Islington. However, you have Johnson, haven't you. In fact, isn't that where you were living when you left your ex-Wife; whilst she was suffering from cancer?
This is possibly your best post. I don’t think that they will win the case that they are taking on as the government will worm its way out using covid and eu law to win. I might be wrong. Still it’s immoral at the very least and all contracts should be open to tender and fairly offered to all.NuneatonO's wrote: ↑Tue Jul 28, 2020 8:10 am Legal Action Against Government Contracts
Over the past few months, the government have awarded billions of pounds worth of contracts to companies without any of the checks being followed to ensure good use of public money. In one particular case, it was to an associate of Dominic Cummings and Michael Gove, and had nothing to do with the coronavirus emergency. As a result, there are legal challenges to the award.
They think that they are above the law
On 11 July, we issued judicial review proceedings against Michael Gove for awarding an £840,000 contract to long-time associates of his and Mr Cummings:

Seriously, how can even the most die-hard Tory Supporters even begin to support or justify what this current mob are doing with tax-payers money? It's not only corrupt, it's just oh so very, very wrong.
Most stuff theses days is spin. New Labour were excellent exponents of this. Don’t we all know this? Spin, fake news, the modern day world. It ain’t going to go away.Orientnil wrote: ↑Thu Jul 30, 2020 2:45 pm Still Spinning
Do you remember when the virus first hit and Prime Minister Cummings decreed that we’d all have to hunker down? I do. Every time you put the tele on, the screen was full of poor sods in ICU, breathing tubes, ventilator machines, induced comas. Scared the stuff out of me, it did. Still does, of course and I’m sure it’s still happening. But, since he decided lock down was to be eased and we’d best get back to work, those images have largely vanished from our screens. Holidays abroad, air travel, ‘eat out to help out’ and all that stuff is portrayed as the new norm. “Virus? What Virus? After I get home on the train, I’m off down the King’s Head, then we can squeeze into the Viceroy of India for a late night Rogan Josh. Second Spike? What a load of tosh. I’m off to Benidorm.”
Also, isn’t this battle Mankind vs Plague? I believe so. So why are we so pleased to claim our testing system is “World Beating?” It’s not the World we’re trying to fight.
Now, we are told it’s very dangerous to bring people back from countries that have a higher level of infection than we do. “Guess that’s right… Don’t want to spread the virus, do we?” And yet, did we not encourage these very same people to travel to countries less heavily infected than UK? And with no quarantine arrangements. Is it not we who are contributing to the new spikes in tourist Spain that scare us so much?
Watch out for the spin, Boys… It wouldn’t surprise me soon to hear fat boy Boo-Boo telling us we’re all overweight!
And? People don’t want labour policies if they did they’d be in power. No one is interested.Mikero wrote: ↑Thu Jul 30, 2020 6:44 pm " New Labour were excellent exponents of this. Don’t we all know this? Spin, fake news, the modern day world."
If you look at the fact checking after the election Labours output, however spun, was largely correct. That of the Tory Party was largely incorrect and in many cases blatent lies.
Mikero
Not yet he hasn’t. Glad justice has been served though, just need a few more of them to face up to crimes. Hope springs eternal.
Ok. I understand your feelings but the message itself is not drivel. It’s actually correct. But nothing new, we all know this stuff. What matters more is what positive action is taken to back up words. Positive action as you say.NuneatonO's wrote: ↑Mon Jul 27, 2020 9:54 pmHi Dohnut,Dohnut wrote: ↑Mon Jul 27, 2020 4:43 pmMixed feelings on this. Don’t like the nanny state idea at all. Well first and foremost, do people really want to be educated about their weight, by a slobbering piece of blubber; that doesn't look as if he has ever missed a square meal during his entire lifetime?
Drivel as in not recognising that a major part of the problem is the availability of fast food; but Councils appear to be under no Govt. restrictions to stop the issue of food trading licences for pizza outlets, chicken shops, etc. High Streets and Town Centres across this land are full of these godforesaken places.
Drivel as in 'educating people' - really? Yeah, that's really going to work, isn't it. If people are so braindead that they'll pay to have a bloody McDonalds hamburger delivered in a Taxi, then what hope is there honestly of these people ever being 'educated'?
Drivel as in if you want healthier people (particularly youngsters) then ban 'energy drinks' and similar, that are full of sugar. Ban their sale immediately and get them off the shelves.
Get more P.E. back into schools. Educate kids into the benefits of joining football and rugby teams; engaging in more outdoor activities, etc.
A while ago, we got back from our evening two hour walk, before she goes off to work. We are blessed to have two beautiful lakes nearby. Apart from the occasional dog walker, we saw almost nobody. The UK appears to have become a very lazy nation of exercise-shy, unfit, people. Walking seems to be just too much of a challenge for people these days. I even see neighbours driving to the shops that are about a ten minute walk away.
Just to add that I'd be equally critical of this rhetoric, even if it was Labour spouting this nonsense. Actions speak louder than words; so instead of saying what you are going to do, take positive action NOW!
