On purely football reasons, I think villa were dead lucky to stay up. They are really poor. Bournemouth are IMO much the better team, but were crucified by injuries early in the season.
Unless Villa strengthen massively, in the short close season, they are certs for the drop next season, particularly as they will probably lose their one class player to bigger & better things.
As an aside, it feels so weird to have the last weekend of the Premier League in the last few days of July, and the FA cup final in August!!!
Rose tinted glasses. You are forgetting how incredibly dire Bournemouth were for over half the season. they played like a team that did not want to be on a football pitch, let alone in the Premier League. As a result they dropped from 7th down into the relegation zone. As for Villa, their biggest bit of fortune was probably getting McGinn back on the park.
If Villa try to be more progressive and take on a new manager, then Dean Smith won't be long without a job. Hopefully he got a bonus for keeping them up and he should be set for life.

I predict Eddie Howe to Palace
I live in south London (ish) and have a bunch of Palace mates. He seems to be the name on their lips, but I can't see it personally. The Palace ownership/board would need a real change in attitude to be able to tempt Eddie Howe there. At Bournemouth he's enjoying building a club (there's a lot going on regards training and youth development) whereas Palace don't seem to have a plan atm.

Villa should be thrown out of the Premier League for not turning on the goal line technology after the COVID break.
Bournemouth are considering a legal challenge over this.
How many times does this type of thing happen everywhere during a season . Officials get a lot of things wrong , we all know that . That's football , some you win , some you lose . If this goes to court it will open up a whole can of worms for the game .

I guess it is the magnitude of what happened. And that it was the first and only occasion where goal line technology had failed. Had that Sheffield United goal counted, Villa would have been relegated rather than Bournemouth. Also in terms of fair play, the Villa keeper should have admitted it was a goal at the time as he knew he had the ball behind the posts. In golf and snooker, players call their own fouls even if not seen by officials.
That written, I don't see Bournemouth being successful in any compensation claim. And if they were, the Germans will be making one for the third goal in 1966...

Stand to be corrected on this but I make it that even if this 'goal' had been given then Villa would still stay up by virtue of scoring 1 goal more than Bournemouth. Would also have made no difference to Sheff Utds final placing.
I was in the stands at Highbury when Villa lost 2-0 but won the league. Of note: just before the teams emerged that the great Pele was at the ground. He did a lap of honour: everyone, but everyone leapt to their feet to celebrate. A cynic like me thought there may be such a thing as a football family.

Make you bang right about that EH, same points, same gd, one goal more. Which begs the question what are Bournemouth protesting for. just take the point off villa, tin pot club anyway (bournemouth that is)

Bournemouth's goal difference was one better, so if Sheffield United had got the goal it would have been 2 better. Also because Villa would have lost a point, they would be level on on points, so Bournemouth would have stayed up.

Would the referee had blown the final whistle after that went in? Or could villa have scored 2 goals in the second half?
Seem to remember villa not getting a pen in that game as well.

Lots of ifs, buts and maybes, decisions for and decisions against for Bournemouth and Villa. Would Villa have come back and equalised if that goal went In? Would they have let in more chasing the game?
However Bournemouth can claim that they have been relegated as a result of the first and only error with goal line technology in over 9,000 matches. Of course, they could have done better throughout the season, but there is a fine margin between staying up and going down.
another interesting view that excludes that goal (maybe)
