Re: Team for 2020/21
But we did build a team around him? For two seasons he was our main man upfront and did a cracking job in both, ending top scorer.
In modern football you can't plan on having a player for more than 2 years if they're any good tbh. If you can manage that and get a good goal return that's a success. What's pointless is bringing through a youth like Sotiriou and seeing him go out the door after barely 10 games.
As for Angol and Wilkinson they don't work as a partnership as neither wants to do the donkey work or aerial battles. Johnson seems to be a fox in the box type so still missing someone to link it all together. That said our current system doesn't really work for any of them, which is half the problem.

Ha yeah very Orient fans to write him off after game one!RedO wrote: ↑Mon Jul 13, 2020 10:19 pm Worth a revisit to see how much of an instant hit Macca was

I might well be wrong but my memory is of him being pretty popular and in demand early doors, could be wrong though.

If we get Sotiriou for another season I'll remind you of that next year!gshaw wrote: ↑Mon Jul 13, 2020 10:36 pmBut we did build a team around him? For two seasons he was our main man upfront and did a cracking job in both, ending top scorer.

Not sure we built our team around Bonne really. Being our main man and doing a great job (as he was and did do) isn't quite the same.

What was very apparent with our NL side was the lack of goals without Bonne in the team. His work rate and running were pretty much our only tactic so whether intentional or not the team in an attacking sense did revolve around him imo.

Re: Team for 2020/21
It did in a defensive sense too.
Teams were unable to play out with the pressure he (and Koroma) put on back lines making them go long, playing into the hands of our big lumps at the back.
I need to update the initial post and put Cisse in for Jobi as the holding midfielder. But have no idea which 2 out of Jobi, Wright and Clay will be first choice with him?

I expect it would be Clay and Wright although I would prefer an upgrade on Wright - nice guy and top scorer that he is.RedO wrote: ↑Fri Jul 17, 2020 6:03 am It didn’t in a defensive sense too.

Am still hoping for a younger Harrold-type to come in though.

Re: Team for 2020/21
Squad is actually starting to look half decent for next season having secured signatures for both Ruel and Cisse.
Loads of options going forwards, just need a bit of improvement at the back - mainly right back (or CB if Turley starts there) - which is what ling/Embleton have been saying.

I agree. Not too sure we are playoff material but with all that is going on, who can say how others are doing. Personally I’ll be happy with a comfortable mid-table position Throughout , with a hint of the playoffs for interest value.RedO wrote: ↑Sat Aug 15, 2020 3:55 pm Squad is actually starting to look half decent for next season having secured signatures for both Ruel and Cisse.

I just hope we don’t have a season flirting with the bottom group.

Re: Team for 2020/21
No way would Widdowson take any of our centre backs places in a back 4 unless it was a real dire emergency.
Possibly in a back 3.

Re: Team for 2020/21
That back four really worries me!
In a flat back four you have two full backs who are not natural defenders, a centre back who is a full back and as a four they lack strength as a defensive unit.
If RE is eyeing that up it could be Jobi in by christmas but i cant believe RE is thinking like that.

Widdowson and Brophy will both be starters. This may be one way to get them both in the team.
Joe is a really accomplished centre half as it goes, I’ve no qualms about him playing there.

Re: Team for 2020/21
He might be accomplished there but for a person who has played the majority of his career at left back not only would it be foolish to think he should be playing at centre back for any length of time, but also a slap in the face to Coulson and Turley.RedO wrote: ↑Mon Aug 17, 2020 9:51 amDisagree.Tent Keague wrote: ↑Mon Aug 17, 2020 8:08 am No way would Widdowson take any of our centre backs places in a back 4 unless it was a real dire emergency.

As I mentioned previously, on the left of a back 3 possibly but no way in a back 4 unless in emergency circumstances.
That's the equivalent of playing a target man on the right wing. Oh wait..

This is to help get around our weak RB issue. Turley could play there, with Happe and Widdowson in the middle and Brophy at LB.
That's our strongest back 4, I'm sure of it.

Re: Team for 2020/21
Turley and Happe our two strongest CBs one young one with pace. Coulson may have experience but alongside Happe there's no legs there to recover a ball over the top for example.
Turley is also our strongest RB, despite having two other RBs in the squad.
Can't see us signing another CB so will probably end up with a weak spot in Ling.
Ling, Turley, Happe, Widdowson / Brophy

Re: Team for 2020/21
Not so much worried about Widdowson at CB, more that possibly our biggest attacking threat would have to focus on defending. He's not he best defender, and with a big weakness at RB, we need someone solid there imo.
I worry about our lack of speed at the back though, which Brophy could help with.
