Team for 2020/21
Vigaroux
Ling Turley Happe Widdowson
Cisse
Wright Clay
Ruel Johnson Brophy
Sarge
Coulson
Judd
Ogie
Sweeney
Jobi
Hector
JMD
Dayton
Dennis
Angol
Wilkinson
Our most likely starting 11 (plus subs) for next season. I’ve assumed we will go with the 4-3-3/4-5-1 that Ross seems to favour. Please let me know if I’ve missed anyone. I will update if/when anyone comes in.
Based on the squad as it stands, with our management team, I predict 17th.
Prediction updated to 12th after securing Cisse's signature.
Prediction updated to 10th after Ruel renews.

Hope not, as that would be the physically weakest front 3 ever to start a football match.

Re: Team for 2020/21
The only prediction you need for the off-season:
Phase 1: SIGN SOME PLAYERS AAAAARRRGH
Phase 2: [we sign a couple of players]
Phase 3: Decent signings - reckon we’re dark horses for promotion

Re: Team for 2020/21
If we had a proper centre forward, who could hold the ball up, win flick on's, etc...I think JMD and Brophy alongside would scare defences. But overall, there's nowhere near enough goals in that team and our fullbacks are weak. And who's winning possession back out of every player in there?

If no new strikers arrive Johnson will definitely
be first named striker on the team sheet without
doubt..

Let's face it, that side / squad with Embleton in charge of it will see us struggling at the bottom of the league.

Re: Team for 2020/21
That's a relegation battle squad. Goals galore flying in down our right hand side and CM. You're asking a 38 y/o to be the holding midfielder and chase all over the place? Waste of McAnuff's talent on the ball and an injury waiting to happen.
As for upfront Wright will be confident of getting the top scorer award two seasons running..

Re: Team for 2020/21
Completely correct. Relegation next season is a big possibility, with that squad and a novice as a head coach ..thats assuming next season actually starts because of covid-19. I rate that as 50:50.
We simply have no trusted ball winner in midfield, and Ling jr is a disaster waiting to happen. I felt Ling jr was weak in the National League, regularly getting pulled all over the place by a decent winger....at a level higher its a cert we will leak goals galore down our right hand side.
Assuming Ruel goes, we are lacking a goalscorer, though i think Angol is a decent player....not sure why it didnt work out for him last season.
Too many mediocre players in the squad built by Ling ( what a liability he is), means we wont bring many in, but a ball winning midfielder and a right back are essential IMO

Probably have Clay alongside Jobi both holding, like Justin did at the end of 18/19 season.gshaw wrote: ↑Sun Jul 12, 2020 10:06 am That's a relegation battle squad. Please stop putting in New Players. This is just a record of Ross’s most likely team at a point in time.

Re: Team for 2020/21
The initial team by RedO is a reasonable guess based on current squad members. Where in the league that team will finish is hard to guess. Whilst we have troubles, so do many other L2 clubs no doubt. But if I had to guess then I’d say bottom third but avoiding relegation. 17th.
I don’t believe we have a manager with sufficient quality to create a consistent match winning team. Devoid of ideas, fragmented performances on the field and for me anyway lacking that leadership quality good managers have in abundance. I find him uninspiring. But we have him and with last season excuses no longer valid we have new ones this season for him to hide behind.
we have no ball-winning, tough-tackling strong player in midfield. Clay is the closest we have and he was pretty poor pre Cisse. We can expect the usual array of backwards 5 yard passes from Wright and our creative midfield options from a 38 year old coming back from injury. So let’s look forward to another year of losing the midfield battles.
Ling is not good enough at the back and offers little going forward. Turley, hope he is back on form. Any opposition manager with half a brain will attack that area of our defence. Really glad we have Vigeroux in goal. Massive step up on Sarge.
And I wonder where our goals will come from. I just don’t see Johnson as a 20 goal a season striker. Angol and Wilkinson have hardly set the place alight, though probably more to do with poo poo service and an incomprehensible playing system.
JMD and Brophy do offer some flair, Dennis too may come good.
Let’s hope we get some decent loans from Spurs, seeing as we are sucking up to them.

Re: Team for 2020/21
On the subject "Sotiriou" i suggested paying him £3,000 a week on a new contract. I was told i was talking bullshit and ridiculed. Well looking at teams put forward so far and the doom being predicted i feel even more vindicated. If people on here dont think players get that type of money in div 2, dream on.
Yes it's a gamble but if he continues form he will be gone inside 12 months for £500,000 plus and you just might have a goalscorer to excite you.
As others said we need 2 possibly 3 defenders, centre mid and goalscoring forward.
Long hard season ahead!

Re: Team for 2020/21
I'm not a fan of Ross but we can at least say that he sees that our squad is lacking a defensive midfielder, hence why we brought in Cisse. Ross is on record saying that our two best central midfielders (Clay & Wright) can't play together in a two. Adding Jobi to those two won't make it any more solid because Jobi is a playmaker. Its not just about numbers in the central midfield area its about the types of player they are. We need, absolutely and positively, a holding midfielder. Ross and Kent have hinted that we won't be making very many signings at all given the size of the squad but I'm pretty certain a holding midfielder will be priority number one. If we can bring in someone decent at protecting the back four and someone who can hold the ball up, up front then we look a much more balanced squad and as such should be looking to finish midtable. Those two signings have to be good ones though or we could be in the serious doodoo.

Re: Team for 2020/21
If we're gonna spend £3k on a striker we might aswell get one with 70 goals in this division that we'll have for 3 seasons rather than one that'll be gone in a year. £500k transfer fee is great (can't see it being that really) but someone to do the business consistently without the constant knowledge we'll have to rebuild soon would be great. Having Bonne here was amazing but we always knew we couldn't build a team around him.
Think Port Vale and Pope maybe.
