More of a semi sarcastic jibe at there even being a consideration of signing a second nearly 40 y/o wide player. Jobi has been with us a while so fair enough but not a second one please.Smendrick Feaselberg wrote: ↑Tue Jul 07, 2020 8:32 amSo why have a sulk about a 36 year old winger then instead of pouring cold water on it like you did when they linked us to someone decent?

If only Coulson, Clay and Ling hadn't been given extensions and we'd be happily waving them goodbye so we could bring in some decent replacements...

Correct. Laughable now and especially so if Ruel goes too (inevitable) and Cisse signs elsewhere (inevitable - Ebou mark 2).Apple Wumble wrote: ↑Wed Jul 08, 2020 2:41 pm If only Coulson, Clay and Ling hadn't been given extensions and we'd be happily waving them goodbye so we could bring in some decent replacements...
No need to worry though as we have resigned Jobi after his magnificent 20 min cameo this season.

Re: Expecting Bad News........
Justin wanted to give clay and coulson a contract for what they did in the promotion season and I wasn’t going to argue then and I wouldn’t now. He was right, what happened after was disappointing in the extreme. I don’t think ling was part of that, he old man stitched that one up like taking Alabi off the list when Justin wanted him gone.
As much as I love the club, what the owners have done, things just ain’t right in the club overall on he playing side of things.

He was decent at the back end of that season. If anyone would put him above Bonne, Koroma, marv, Jobi, Widdowson that season they are blind or stupid.
Either way - that was in a league lower. And we gave him 2 years. Have some foresight. Same with Coulson really.

Oh God, it must be Ling bashing season again.
I think Clay has proved himself in Lg2. Coulson probably a touch slow. Reluctant to judge anyone too harshly considering the events of last summer.

I guess most of our squad was blind and stupid then as they’re the ones who voted him player of the season.Apple Wumble wrote: ↑Wed Jul 08, 2020 7:05 pmYou like that player of the season line don’t you?Prestige Worldwide wrote: ↑Wed Jul 08, 2020 7:01 pmWhy would we get rid of Clay when he was player of the season?Apple Wumble wrote: ↑Wed Jul 08, 2020 2:41 pm If only Coulson, Clay and Ling hadn't been given extensions and we'd be happily waving them goodbye so we could bring in some decent replacements...

Offering Clay only one year after the season he had would have been a bit of an insult - had we done that and he left for a two-year deal elsewhere, everyone would have been up in arms at the club for not giving him what he wanted
Coulson I agree struggles a bit at this level, but clearly a good character to have around and a positive dressing room influence. He’ll be fine to have as a bit-part player, which I think he will be once we sign a CB.

Clay is fine alongside a quality ball-winning CM, as we saw with Cissé. When asked to be that midfield destroyer he seriously struggles.

Clay was far from the worst player last season - and one that is needed if the team try to play a pressing game. He'd tell you he's not the most gifted, but he'd argue if you questioned his work ethic.Apple Wumble wrote: ↑Wed Jul 08, 2020 9:06 pmDid you see Clay last season? I saw Ross do the same.
Lets see this season what happens & judge.

Justin’s curve with the players was up, up and up.
Ross’s curve has been down, up, down and up.
The jury is out, I want him to succeed and only what he says and does and the signings made will determine if he is to be a success or failure. I hope he wins. But, I fear the worst.

Re: Expecting Bad News........
Of the extensions, I would go along with both Coulson and Clay. Josh may have slipped from the first choice pairing but is still great to have as one of the four centre halves, no question. Clay is an extremely limited footballer, no question, but with a proper holding CM like Cisse behind him, he can run around like a loon in front of him and is effective.Apple Wumble wrote: ↑Wed Jul 08, 2020 7:05 pmYou like that player of the season line don’t you?Prestige Worldwide wrote: ↑Wed Jul 08, 2020 7:01 pmWhy would we get rid of Clay when he was player of the season?Apple Wumble wrote: ↑Wed Jul 08, 2020 2:41 pm If only Coulson, Clay and Ling hadn't been given extensions and we'd be happily waving them goodbye so we could bring in some decent replacements...

It's the extensions to the likes of Ling, Brill, Dayton that should be questioned. The signing of Wright as well was an odd one when it was that CDM we needed all along.

Clay to my mind, is a very good player (and a Midlands lad too).
At times last season, he did look as if he needed to shift up into a higher gear - but I'd be very disappointed if we lost him.

Clay deserved a new contract and he’a better than Wright. I would have said keeping Coulson would bring Happe and Ekpiteta on but they didn’t improve last season and the whole defensive unit was a shambles

Re: Expecting Bad News........
All comes down to that defensive CM. We won NL in spite of having one, not because of it but you can't get away with that in L2, as we saw with most visitors to BR running riot in midfield prior to Cissé's arrival.
I have no doubt JE would've been looking to sign one given we released Lee and Lawless but only had Wright come in. Trying to put Marsh there was a classic Ling signing,. It's a real blind spot for him for some reason.

So in the end, only Ekpiteta didn't sign up, and he ran his contract down to move up a division.
