Percy Ingle closing down

Post by Currywurst and Chips »

Mainstay of the East London/Essex high street and superior Baker to Gregg's, Percy Ingle, is to close all its bakeries by next year :(

Indeed a sad announcement, no decent bakers left now then
I remember as a kid in Leyton getting our bread and cakes from Mays the bakers in Park Rd
They had a few other shops around and about the area, guess they went ages ago

Sad times, is it a case of Gregg's just pushing them put the market place?

That’s surprise news indeed. Apart from the very occasional cake or sausage roll from the Leyton one I don’t ever use them, so I’m not sure why it’s made me feel sad.

I preferred them to Greggs. Quite sad about this, but I guess they must have run out of dough.

The year ahead is not going to be good for a lot of people who rely on retail for their income.

I doubt its from gr#ggs , you were either Percy or the other lot &
when ever i went past the 1 in.Walthamstow there were far more people
In Percy . They offered Veggie sausage rolls ages ago to , years before the
northern excuse did !

Closed for 2 months March to may would have more to do with it
Not the most profitable industry & they always had plenty of staff .

Correct me if I'm wrong but Greggs isn't actually a bakery (bread, rolls, etc) any more is it? I thought they pulled the plug on the bakery side and now just concentrate on food in the go.

Cheesed me off regardless. Used to love a sausage roll and a bit of Tottenham cake before the match.

I remember when I was at school at Upton House back in the early sixties, me and my friend, on the way home, always stopped
off at Percy Ingle's, opposite the Round Chapel, to buy a Cinnamon Round each, they were absolutely delicious. We made them last all the way to Upper Clapton Road. Happy days.

Sorry to hear about the demise of Percy Ingle, as a kid I loved their swiss buns, licking off the icing, and the occasional fresh cream and apple puff as a treat.

I remember Mays in Park Rd too, used to stop off on the way home from school for half a pound of broken biscuits, cost something ridiculous like 1p. It became a bookmakers and is now a convenience shop.

It’s the supermarkets that have done for them...such a shame.

I do remember it marcho, pease pudding, faggots and savs in big metal pots, don't recall pies though.
We knew it as dewdrops, bloke in there always had one hanging from his hooter, never saw it drop though.
There was the Advance laundry shop too, took and collected stuff like sheets in a big cloth bag.
Also an excellent chippy, sweetshop called Corams, hardware shop with a paraffin machine and a Butchers on the corner.

Sounds like from your name you're not that far from me now

It is a sad fact that independent bakeries are finding it hard to compete with supermarkets, we lost Kistrucks in the Woodford/Chigwell area.

Sad to read that.

My late Aunt used to work in Percy Ingle's sometimes, I've often popped in the one in Leyton High Road. They'll be missed.

Percy Ingles = part of east end culture. A sign of the times I suppose.

For me it was lunchtime rolls as a student; my mum always bought their bread from Crisp Street. The best thing of all was - and still is - that they do the best jam doughnut about.

A Wenzel's bakery has just opened opposite the Percy Ingle in Enfield Town. Never tried their stuff before but heard from others that they are pretty decent.
