We dont know whats been offered though do we?

We have been trying to tie him down on a longer improved contract since Christmas same as big Marv, but sometimes agents can smell a nice little earner if thier client moves on and to be fair who is going to turn down the chance of more money and playing in a higher division. It's getting harder and harder for clubs at our level to retain their younger talent, what we regard as a good contract is a drop in the ocean to other higher division clubs. TBF a move to Peterborough would be a good one for Ruel he would get a real chance there. If we got £125k and a sell on might be worth taking.

The thing is, Sotiriou never really looked like he was capable of breaking through and holding down a regular place in the team whenever I saw him play from his first appearance as a 16 year old back in 2017. He made a few sub appearances but didn't stand out.

Then I remembered that he is still very young - He is still only 19 now. When he signed his first pro contract he was only 17 I think. He was only 18 when he went on loan to Dover last October/November.

I can see why people are annoyed that he wasn't signed up quicker or maybe even longer, but to be honest you can't sign youngsters on long term contracts until they prove themselves to be capable in the first team - Which Sotiriou has done since he has got older and been given more of a chance.

I can understand peoples arguments that he should've played ahead of Alabi earlier - Even I think that, but throwing him in the deep in a promotion season at 18 would've been a huge gamble, we did do that before with Jabo Ibhere back in 2001, but its still alot of pressure for such a young player.

Now he is 19 (20 in December) he is maturing better as a player and I can see why the club have taken their time with him. The obvious danger now is that a bigger club could take him - But that will always happen with us, it will likely happen with Dan Happe as well this summer when he is sold. (If anyone has any money though!!)

£125k wouldn't be a terrible amount for him as he's only start 7 games for us and made 8 sub Appearances with 5 goals.

I can see why the club have been steady with him, but there will always be the danger that being too steady with a youngster means they could slip away.

100% correct.
If we lose him, we will have lost the best young striker we've ever brought through. If he stays, and is played, he will score 30 goals next season, and will be worth at least 800,000k.
Ling is hopeless, on every level IMO
Really? That's a strong series of statements for a lad who's only played a few games. Ruel should show Ling your post and he'd be asking for the moon in wages!

I want to keep him, but I can't see how we would have known a season ago that he was going to blossom. Nobody was raving about him - even in October/November. He appears to be good but needs a run. TBH here is probably the best place for him next season but it will be the players decision alone. Right now all Ling can do is stress the benefits of playing 30+ games next season, because he won't be getting that number in L1 next season.
TBF I was stating a case for him as far back as last September because he was/is different to what we had up front, I'm dissapointed he wasn't used more and had to wait until the tail end of the season before he got a chance. That said he isn't a 30 goal striker by any stretch of the imagination and still has a lot of improvement in him.

It’s not down to Ling if he plays. As for the contract, Ruel will have an agent and will not be forced to sign any deal just because it suits the club. Don’t work that way. Little Ling can do in these circumstances other than offer him a decent deal, Embleton promising a good amount of game time and Jobi offering him decent mentoring.

I have little doubt the club are doing all they can. But Ruel is holding all the cards.

No No No... This is where Leyton Orient Football Club get it so wrong sell at the first opportunity
for a nominal fee, whilst prolonging contracts of players who are long term injured..
We missed out on seeing hopefully what Sam Dalby could have done for our club selling out at the first opportunity so let's not make the same mistake with Ruel we've seen enough in the games he played last season that he could be a real talent ..
I feel we can all agree that the board and management should be doing everything possible to keep Ruel playing football in E10

Exactly that.

Didn’t get a look in all season, only when that fella from Bournemouth came in he was loaned out to get him ready.

Badly mismanaged by Embleton, so don’t blame him if he clears off. But I’ll be gutted.
Even when he got a look, and scored, he was dropped if I remember correctly.

Similar to Marvin, who kept being dropped. Why would you re-sign?

The thing is that the young players we have sold all wanted to go including Dalby (who I liked a lot) can't force them to stay. For fans it's all about the club but players have to progress thier careers. No doubt the club want to keep the best players but the power is all with the players and thier agents these days.

Played out of position on the wing, still scoring, still dropped.

Scandalous management of a youngster.

Every game Sotiriou scored in, he started the following game. Not sure where you got that stat from?

Was Marvin really being dropped all the time?

He started the first 13 games in all competitions this season and was only really dropped around October/November time when Fletcher took charge, when Embleton took charge for the second time after Fletchers 29 days, he started him for 12 of the 16 games afterwards. Since the 1-1 draw with Macclesfield in February he'd been out with a shin injury.

He scored at the end of December, out of the starting 12 by 11th September, so he started one game after scoring before being dropped for the next 3 games.

He started about 6-7 games for us all season. Understandable I guess when he was kept out by the prolific strikers we had at the start of the season.

Dalby went because his dad was so incensed by the treatment FB handed out to the young lads and to his son in particular. In those last months, when Dalby was playing he only received his basic £150 per week and was not paid a variety of other bonuses. His dad vowed he'd not play for the O's as a result. Was it the right decision, next season will tell. He's not a boy anymore and has to break through at some professional level very soon, although he's been doing ok in Watford's U23 team.

Out of interest, if a good promising player isn't signed up on a contract extension, but less promising players, say Sling or Clay do, who do you suggest I direct my annoyance? As you clearly dont think it should be the bloke who is charge of the contracts.

You could direct your annoyance at the player and/or his agent for holding out for the best deal, irrespective of where it comes from. Silly billy.

Do you know definitively how much he was sold for? In any case, he has barely played for Huddersfield. Not even sure if he got on the field with Rotherham. Getting a good wedge no doubt, so good luck to him.

Is the correct answer DuvB, It's not up to the club if a player and his agent decide to go elsewhere on better money, The club can only offer what they can afford, it's been like that since Bosman came into effect power with the player and agents these days.
