Turntable recommendations please

Looking to get one for my lad who has recently discovered vinyl. Not looking at spending a fortune, seen this which has a little more power than most with separate speakers. Thoughts and/or alternatives, thanks in advance

Try Richer Sounds. Can go online or they have some shops. They give good advice and reviews and are very competitive.

I have a Rega Planar 1 Plus through Ruark MR1 mk2 speakers, turntable has a moving magnet preamp built in so you don't need a phono stage in a separate amp, therefore straight into the speakers which have an amp built in and voila!

I have loads of viynl, technics rig etc but never play it and use Spotify instead when I'm walking and cycling.

Agree with a Richer Sounds. Have used both London Bridge and Cambridge stores.
As for the deck ... NAD is my preference but you may need a pre-amp to boost the signal.
Always preferred a crystal stylus when I was a kid ... shove the signal straight into a valve and off your go!

I'd go with the reviews on Amazon, you can always return it if it turns out to be junk. From a very quick look it's a slight step up from some of the vinyl shredders but it's going to sound pretty ropey at that price. Saying that, i grew up with copied tapes and a piece of sh*t with a built in mono speaker and loved it.

In normal times I'd say get down to a second hand hi fi shop, for £50 quid or so more than that you could just about get a turntable, amp and bookcase speakers that would sound a whole lot better and have the advantage of you being able to upgrade bits individually if they got into it.

For what it's worth, as much as I enjoy putting on a record, the idea that vinyl sounds better is total guff in my opinion. A cd or digital set up is almost always going to sound better than any turntable set up which costs double.

I completely agree with you about the sound. I'm sure if you listened in a soundproof room with great acoustics you could tell. I love music and when I was younger I would rather spend money on the music rather the equipment.

Just for example, about £40 more than your budget and in a five minute search, but its going to be a lot better. I'd always prefer to pay more and listen first butni'd guarantee something like this would be a massive improvement on an all in one box.

unfortunately these days, it's an expensive hobby mate.
The Rega and NAD options are decent enough; though I've tried both, and moved on.

I'd be very wary indeed of an 'all in one' unit. My guess is not only would the sound quality be very shaky indeed; the whole set up of the thing would be flimsy, and maybe even likely to damage vinyl, rather than just play it. Avoid, would be my advice.

As Riento says, the Project stuff is okay. Entry is about £160 I think, but don't expect much more than functionality. If your budget is sub-£200, my advice would be to forget vinyl, and buy an all in one cd unit instead.

If he gets the bug for Vinyl he can spend his own schecles , to upgrade .

I've got a Project 1 Turntable that I use through Kanto powered speakers which have a built in pre amp.
Excellent sound and if bought secondhand wouldn't be too much more than the set up you linked to
