Lockdown Film Reviews

Post by ContrifibulatoryFred »

Let’s have some brief film reviews here I assist us all who have to trawl through multi-channel platforms in search of anything palatable

YESTERDAY
A good idea poorly executed, with a tad too much Ed Sheeran involvement

6/10

Watched Me and Earl and the Dying Girl last night on Netflix.

9/10 - indie coming of age story with a twist. Brian Eno all over the soundtrack. Funny, sad and heartwarming and very original.

The INVISIBLE MAN

Transparent plot with strange sub-twists. Elisabeth Moss puts in a sterling performance.

I've started watching the Bond movies in sequence. Leaving aside the casual sexism and racism which, rightly, wouldn't be acceptable now this is what I think so far :

Dr No - held up surprisingly well and was less reliant on the big action sequences than I expected. 7/10

From Russia With Love - shocker. Paper thin plot, stilted dialogue. Very poor 2/10

Goldfinger. Happily this one held up really well. Good story line, great villians (Oddjob and Goldfinger), kitty Galore and the first appearance of the magnificent Aston Martin DB5. Easily the best of the 5 I've watched so far. 8 /10

Thunderball. This one was OK. For the time it was made some of the technical underwater filming is very good but for a modern audience more used to camera trickery those sequences go on a bit too long and made the film drag. Pass mark, just 6/10

You Only Live Twice Again, OK. Possibly the first of the 'typical' Bond movies with the big explosive action sequence at the end. Loses a mark for the insulting and laughable bit where they 'disguise' 007 as a Japanese worker 5/10

Blinded by the Light - excellent flick about an Asian lad in 80's Britain discovering Springsteen. Anyone growing up at that time will recognise familiar refer point. Good fun 7/10

Vivarium - WTF? Good to look at good idea but at the end I felt why did I bother 4/10

Sulphar and White - Slow burning drama about a successful City Trader who struggles to come to terms with historical abuse 7/10

Jojo Rabbit - uses a sledgehammer to crack a nut. Unfunny when it is supposed to be too.

Hustlers - Interesting in parts, flashy, but ultimately vacuous.

Portrait Of A Lady On Fire - Beautifully shot and acted. Stunning, just watch it 9/10

Dogs Don't Wear Pants - Weird but wonderful. Not for kids, read synopsis before watching 6/10
