Sid Bishop (the player) RIP

Post by Disoriented »

Sad news - has passed away (the player not the boarder).

He was a member of probably the finest half-back line that ever played for the Orient. A true gentleman. RIP.

Sad to read, was one of my late father’s favourite players, he often used to talk about him.

RIP Sid.

Lucas, Bishop, Lea. Great days, great players.

Think he scored against Spurs when we lost 5-1 at home, if memory serves, could be wrong

Thanks for the memories.

RIP Sid.

Very, very sad news.
Used to be one of my favourite players.
An excellent centre half.

Very sad news. We have had some excellent centre halves at the orient but none could come close to Sid.
During our promotion year to top flight it was over 20 games before a centre forward scored against us, back in the days when 1 centre half marked the centre forward. Sid turned down several offers from top flight clubs and he had taken one he would surely have played for England.

Sid was my boyhood hero from when I first started watching the Orient in their promotion season from Division One. I never saw a better Centre Half playing for us than him, amazing defender, won most everything in the air, he had everything you would want in that position. He must have been something really special as Sid impressed no other than the great Bill Shankly who wanted him to sign for Liverpool, Sid decided to stay loyal to the Os. Sid suffered a bad leg injury when playing against Sheffield Wednesday in our one season in Division One ( I was at that game along with my dad ) I never got to know what the actual injury was but Sid never seemed to me to be quite as good again as he was pre-injury. Up to that game the Os had being doing well, but that awful game ended up with a few injuries to key players and after that experience of being ''roughed up'' by Wednesday, we never really got going again and after just the one season in Division One, we ended up getting relegated back to Division Two. RIP Sid, great man and great player.

Excellent centre half and probably the last of those great fifties sides to leave us. He was crocked by the Sheff Wed centre forward David (bronco) Layne. Ronnie Foster scored in that 1-5 defeat against Spurs.
Very sad to hear of Sids passing. I had very good memories of his time with us.

Fantastic player. With Lucas and Lee he completely held the team together. I have always said that if it wasn't for Bronco Layne the Sheff. Wed.forward we would have stayed up that year.
RIP Sid

Very sad to hear. Never saw him play, but the more I`ve read about him, the more I've realized he must have been some player. Played his whole career for The O`s and on the highest level as well.

RIP, Mr. Bishop.

My old man used to tell me he was exceptional and that back line was possibly the best we ever had or at least what he had seen.

I never saw him play, but I remember being introduced to him as a teenager many moons ago.

RIP
