Re: Coronavirus
How China muzzled its Bat Woman: Beijing authorities hushed up the findings of a scientist who unlocked the genetic make-up of the coronavirus within days of the outbreak - which is vital for tests and vaccines.

Re: Coronavirus
Current death totals for England for the last few days which will be added to over the coming days
7 Apr 660
8 Apr 709
9 Apr 562
10 Apr 423
11 Apr 121
The jump between 7&8th suggests we haven't peaked yet. Hopefully the figure for the 9th will not overtake 8th.

When will deaths outside of hospitals be added in and why are they not being included?

Re: Coronavirus
Interesting article from the Washington Post:
“British Prime Minister Boris Johnson exited the hospital Sunday nearly a week after entering intensive care for coronavirus-related complications . But that spot of good news was darkened by a new grim statistic: His country’s official count of hospital deaths related to the virus surpassed 10,000 over the weekend.
Public health experts fear that Britain’s mortality rate may soon or already be the highest in all of Europe, as pandemic-ravaged Italy and Spain slowly get to grips with the disease. Britain’s steady shift toward becoming the new European epicenter of the outbreak stands in stark contrast with nearby Germany, the only country on the continent with a bigger economy and whose government reported its first case around the same time as Johnson’s government.
In the second week of March, Johnson’s government justified its largely lax strategy — schools, restaurants and other major venues remained open, while only the elderly who were already infirm were advised to stay home — on the grounds that it was pursuing “herd immunity,” counting on Britain’s invulnerable groups to contract the disease and become immune. Just days later, the government backtracked, its supposed pragmatism crashing against new worrying projections of hundreds of thousands of deaths should it not impose lockdowns and strict measures of social distancing.
Meanwhile, on March 11, German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned that 60 to 70 percent of her country could contract the virus. But that wasn’t a statement of resignation — Merkel said the challenge now was all about winning time, and her country’s federal, state and local authorities had already set about attempting to achieve that.
“Nearly three months since their first positive cases, Germany has conducted more than 1.3 million tests and contact tracing remains central to its strategy,” noted BuzzFeed in a piece that presented a thorough timeline comparing both countries’ handling of the crisis. “The UK has carried out fewer than 335,000 tests and all but dropped attempts to aggressively trace contacts. About 3,000 people have died so far in Germany. More than 10,000 have died in the UK.”
Johnson’s proclivity for wartime bravura rings hollow in the midst of a public health emergency , especially when set against the more somber messaging of German politicians. “This pandemic is not a war,” German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said in an Easter Sunday address that urged patience and solidarity with other countries. “It does not pit nations against nations, or soldiers against soldiers. Rather, it is a test of our humanity."
As has been previously stated, Johnson and this Tory government have blood on their Indifferent and incompetent hands.

Further it's more than politicians because the chief medical officer advised

Re: Coronavirus
Really difficult to track these figures. We are apparantly using Internationally recognised tracking methods, which are numbers tested positive and number of deaths in hospital.
There were 717 deaths reported today (13/4) in the UK. Infections have fallen today but ICU bed usage up 1% since yesterday, (12% in East of England where I am which corralates with a surge of infections a week ago) a good sign as infections falling slightly but data maybe skewed because of the long bank holiday weekend.
Keep an eye out over the next few days first for consistantly falling infections, followed by falling numbers in ICU and then eventually an evening out of deaths followed by a falling number of deaths. Would expect lockdown to continue until clear evidence that all these numbers are falling at least another two to three weeks.

Re: Coronavirus
...and then what?
If we attribute the falling number of deaths to the lockdown, do you then start relaxing the lockdown?
One might reasonably expect the figures to start to rise again.
I don't know what the answer is, other than the fairly impractical one of maintaining a lockdown until a vaccine is developed.

Re: Coronavirus
My guess is a rolling on/off lockdown with sector by sector adjustments, for possibly up to 18 months.
Whether people like it or not, herd immunity is the most likely way we're getting out of this.

Re: Coronavirus
$64000 Question. The scientist that I heard today said likely to be based on age groups at lowest risks so probably under 40's with no underlying health issues first and then track transmission for a few weeks to see if it spreads again, If it is containable them 40-60 age group with no UHI's and track again. If this does not work it could be 3 months in every 4 in lockdown until a vaccine is available.o-no wrote: ↑Mon Apr 13, 2020 5:40 pm ...and then what?

I think those of us in the older age group of 60+ with UHI's will be isolating until a vaccine is available.
Oxford University have said there is 80% chance of a Vaccine being avaialable in September but scaling up the number of doses needed, Distribution and administering them would take some time.

Re: Coronavirus
Interesting comment in The Mirror directed precisely at the Tory acolytes on here:
We're sorry if you feel the Prime Minister should should not have boasted about shaking hands, should have gone to hospital sooner rather than waiting until the Queen's address to the nation so he wouldn't be photographed looking weak, or that this government should have told the truth about his being at death's door for 48 hours, during which time he was tended by two migrant medics of precisely the sort we were hoping to stop coming in.
Indeed.

Princess Beatrice promising to cheer us up when this is all over with a good old Royal Wedding. Along with Wills giving us the 'we're all in it together' speech live from Kensington Palace and reminding us we're the very best of British in a crisis, it's enough to make me haul out the old union Jack and she'd a tear of pride.
I make him dead right, apart from the rucks over toilet roll in Asda, neighbours grassing each other up for going out more than once in a day, police threatening to pepper spray people for dropping off foot to their families or arrest them for being in their front garden, massively rich people who have avoided tax for years arranging bail outs for their companies, the continual reminder that there's one rule for those in power and one for us plebs, the government blaming nurses for using too many gloves and thousands of people dying. But apart from that he's definitely right. As for Beatrice, it really has been too long since her old.man has made an appearance and watching him dressed to the nines to walk her down the aisle while knowing I've contributed to it will certainly give me a warm glow.
