Happy Spring Festival, everyone!

Post by slacker »

Being brought up in a smorgasbord of barely observant (High) Church of Ireland - dad’s side - and Ashkenazi Jewish heritage - mum’s Silesian background - , I have the win-win of first-full-moon-after-the-spring-equinox festivals to dip into. So it’s latkes, mazto balls and brisket for the Passover seder, fish on Good Friday, lamb on Sunday and as many chocolate eggs as I can stuff in my face.

All without having to bother myself unduly with any religious observations and pieties (I never got as far as communion or bar mitzvah, although I did get some cash and an extended family get-together on my thirteenth birthday, and am comfortable enough/know the ropes in both Church & Synagogue). Happy enough with that cultural baggage.

So, what’s your feasts and obligations? Anyone here who would usually attend religious services (and no, watching Orient is not a religious duty no matter what the likes of OFF might try to tell you) if it wasn’t for the lockdown?

From an Irish Catholic background, but chucked in all that nonsense as I hit my teens (oh, the early 2000's seem so long ago now). Most of my peer group did the same, as we were brought up and educated in such a different culture from our parents that the Church just couldn't keep its grip on us.

However, I'll be strictly observing the sacred feast of St Easter, and following Christ's example of the gobbling of thy chocolate eggs.

Grew up in a quite strict family, so Easter time was always a big event where the whole family would get together (sadly not possible this year). We'd traditionally go to my Nan's on the Sunday for a meal and celebrate the life of the Easter Bunny

We would all go to church (CofE) as a family, in fact I was saying to someone just yesterday how much we'd like to go this week as we've missed quite a few weeks now.

Who was it you were speaking to, Thor? If it's anyone less than a senior bishop then I'll be very disappointed.

Heh, I had to do a stint as an alter boy too, tuffers. It was a bit of a status symbol for Irish mothers. Thankfully none of the priests tried to get friendly and we sneaked the wine.

Cheap Cadbury Eggs tonight, washed down with, er, Corona lager. Disappointing. Why the feck did we allow the Yanks - responsible for that sick-tasting Hershey’s rubbish - to mess with our choccy crown jewels? (A little kvetch is a Passover tradition, so I’m allowed a moan about this).

Yeah Cadbury’s is horrible now.

I smashed half a galaxy egg, which was lovely but extremely rich and a couple of cans of brewdog.

Full jew over here, but no Passover celebration here. Being the first born, I should be grateful really! Lamb on Sunday which I’m going to slow cook.

No religious leanings at all in our family, but live opposite a RC church so quietest Easter ever.
Usually people and cars at all hours for days before, during and after the weekend.

Altar boy becomes sprint champion in later life. There's a book in there somewhere.
