Thor you and me

Post by Redcard »

Hi Thor , you and me are the only ones left on here. Funny, with all this time on my hands I have been getting in touch with friends from long ago, and so have people I know.
Anyway my pal, another lifelong os supporter posted a photo of billy fury and elvis, a girl called Cathy said she saw elvis when she went to Vegas to see the Ali v bugner. I thought she was Cathy from Berwick st. She replied that she wasn’t, she was Alan rudkins wife, and she knew my father well.
Brought back memories of Alan, probably the greatest British boxer not to win a world title, when it was 15 rounds and only one body.
Didn’t he lose by one round to fighting harada, mitsobishi seki, and Lionel rose.
I got paid £3 a round for sparing with him at the butchers arms gym.
One occasion I took a bit of a liberty and hit him with a jab, left hook and short right
He nodded, feinted with a jab, and hit me with a left hook under the ribs. I have never been put on the floor, but I turned and laid over the ropes. He turned me round and said come on your not hurt and I managed to fight back till the bell went.
I called it a day. I wasn’t going to get hospitalised for £9. A truly great fighter.

Going back to the subject matter, he is a boxer I've read about as he was fighting before I was born and retired not long after I started walking. You're right in that he is regarded as arguably the best british fighter to have not won a title and its said two of his split decisions were "homer" scoring losses rather than he got beat.

Pretty cool you spared with him though, how did you deal with his speed?

Like most times when pros spar with amateurs, he just took it easy, it was only when I tried to be smart I was put in my place.
Sparring sessions as you know are not meant to be full bloodied wars , unless of course it involves the likes of mike Tyson .

Ha ha. Yeah the difference in class between a pro and a novice is vast. A great experience though to have done that with such a boxer.

I caught the second half of creed last night and watching Bellew I bet he spared like he fought. I was thinking I can't see him being any other way be it training or fighting.

The difference between amateurs and pros is vast , especially at the lower weights . When sparing the main difference is that pros plant their feet and use more upper body movement rather than using footwork.

Tuffers, assuming that remark about alcoholism was aimed at me, that wasn’t very nice was it.
I just know that you were probably inebriated at the time , deeply regret being so spiteful, and are about to apologize .

He's a top Boxer mate. Just apologise and get it over with.

Last thing we need on here is you getting that sneaky uppercut to the left rib as the thumb of the glove gouges your one good eye.
